Which power supply / charger for which tablet?
If the battery of a tablet is empty, it has to be recharged. This can be done either via the included power adapter, a USB power plug adapter, a charger or directly on the notebook or computer. Charging via the computer or laptop is the slowest option, since at the standard voltage of 5 volts, normal USB 2.0 ports allow a maximum of 0.5 amps (A) and USB 3.0/3.1 ports allow a maximum of 0.9 amps (A).
Which charger / USB charger is suitable for the tablet? What should I pay attention to?
It is important that the power adapter / charger supplies the input voltage required / supported by the tablet. For smartphones and tablets, this is 5 volts. When charging smartphones and tablets, the wattage that the end device (tablet, smartphone or notebook) requires for charging is decisive (see table). This can be calculated using the voltage and current (see formula) and results from multiplying the current (amperes) and voltage (volts). Conversely, the charging current can also be determined in this way by dividing watts by volts.
Formula: P = U * I [W = V * A]
P = power in watts
U = voltage in volts
I = current in amperes
The current is expressed in amperes and differs depending on the type of charger. Ampere determines the speed of the charging process and should be as high as possible, although currently no more than 5 A is possible. If the ampere value is higher than the required power, it will not harm the connected device. The power adapter is merely underutilized. If the end device requires more amps than the power adapter can supply, it will not charge and the power adapter could become defective in the long run (if not fused). A charger / USB charger with, for example, 2 amps comes to a value of 10 watts at a voltage of 5 volts (2A x 5V = 10 W).
Does the voltage have to match exactly?
Yes, the voltage must be exactly the same, otherwise the end device may be damaged (regardless of whether the voltage is higher or lower).
Can the amperage be higher for the power supply?
- - Device needs more amperes than charger supplies
-> charger is overloaded and can become defective in the long run - - Device needs less amperes than charger supplies
-> everything is ok, charger is just not used to capacity
Example: A power supply / charger with 5 amps and 12 volts can charge tablets that require exactly 12 volts and a maximum of 5 amps.
Fast Charging - Charging tablets quickly
From a power of 18 watts, the charging process is considered "fast charging". The majority of modern devices nowadays have this function, which increases the wattage during the charging process in a controlled manner. To avoid overheating, special accessories are needed that communicate with the chip of the end device to throttle the charging speed in high heat.
Note: When charging the tablet, it is important to pay attention to the charger and the outlet that is used. Modern chargers work between 110 and 230 volts. Accordingly, one should make sure that no outlet outside of this range is used. The end device should not suffer any damage, but it will not charge at full power. Do not use a smartphone or tablet charging cable to charge a notebook / laptop as they use 5 volts, whereas most laptops require 18 volts (about 90 watts).
Rules of thumb:
- Charger with 5 volts and 1 to 2 amps for tablets.
- Charger with 18 volts and between 4 and 5 amps for notebooks / laptops.

Tablets are increasingly being permanently installed in suitable protective housings or in-wall solutions. The tablets are used for smart home control, as room managers or information terminals.
